On 15 September 2023, Mr Wingerath and Ms Baumann's advanced art class took part in "De-fashioning Education" at the UdK to learn more about sustainable fashion and recycling old clothes into new pieces.
A week before the excursion, we were given the choice between two workshops: Stitch N’ Bitch or Cradle to Cradle.
On the day of the event, we met at 11 a.m. in front of the UdK Fashion building. Once everyone had gathered, we entered the building and received our workshop wristbands. Finding the workshop room was straightforward, as many of us had participated in a three-day workshop at UdK just a few months prior.
The workshop commenced with a presentation by the two organizers, who shared insights into their backgrounds and what inspired them to start the workshop.
After signing a safety contract and receiving an explanation of the sewing process, we began cutting the fabric. Most of us used corset layouts with fabric stencils, while others opted for more creative cutting. To ensure sustainability, we used old T-shirts donated for the purpose, which would have otherwise been discarded.
Within an hour, the entire class had finished cutting all the parts of their corset stencils. The final step was to sew them together. To do this, we headed to UdK's sewing room. Since most of us were beginners in sewing, we received a brief lesson on the basics. Once we had become "professional" sewers, we began assembling all our pieces. This turned out to be more challenging than expected, but the results were well worth the effort.
The workshop was a fantastic and captivating experience for our entire class. UdK provided a relaxed yet inspiring work environment, and we thoroughly enjoyed learning how to recycle clothes that we'll all be wearing in the future.
