How can parents and other members of the school community contribute to the development of the school? Here are some answers.
You could become a parent representative and be a member of the Parents' Council (Gesamtelternvertretung, GEV for short). Many parents feel they want to help the school with specific problems. Over the years, several areas have been identified that require regular attention. For these areas, committees have been set up. Each committee develops its own structures to facilitate the distribution of labour and to create sustainable institutional memory in a community in which high-mobility is a given. Support the school by joining one or more of these groups of dedicated volunteers! Here's the list of committes:
Communications & Website: This committee primarily deals with strengthening the internal communications between the various members of the school community through integrated communications by physical and electronic means. Event Coordination: Coordinating and supporting NMS events and existing programs through volunteerism, advocacy and boosterism, the Events Coordination Committee works very closely project leaders and the Communication & Website Committee to achieve committee objectives. Volunteers for this committee generally are on-going commitments with specific job titles such as Hospitality Coordinator and German Public Relations Coordinator. Fundraising & Sponsorships: The auction held at the Sommerfest/Festival of Nations Celebration and then the wintertime Boogie Nights Ball are our main fundraising events for the school. The Fundraising Committee is considering possible new fundraising activities: a book fair, producing an international cookbook, an annual fundraising drive during which sponsorships for a musical instrument, a piece of sports equipment, a series of books will be sought. The committee will also explore how foundations and prizes can provide additional income, and approach corporate donors. ITC Workgroup: Students, teachers, administrators and parents jointly participate on this committee to research, write, implement and evaluate a working technology plan for the school. Lego Lab: This cooperative committee of parents and NMS Primary educators will plan and coordinate the activities of the NMS Primary Lego Lab AG. Beginning in the 2010-2011 school year, the committee will hold a weekly workshop for primary grades and assist with any classroom activities connected to theLab. Do you need more information? Log Book Committee: Planning, writing and designing the yearly log book is a cooperative effort among parents, students and teachers. Interested in volunteering or for more information please contact: logbook@nelson-mandela-school. net
Parent Welcome & Support: This committee implements activities and communications that assist newly admitted families to become quickly acclimated to the NMS community. Primary activities include coordination of Parent Info Breakfasts held every couple of months throughout the year at NMS-Primary, and written communications for the website and to be handed out to new families. School Vision & Standards/Leitbild: The future of the school is the main concern of this committee. It also takes part in meetings of the steering committee of the school and contributes to the school handbook. Sommerfest/Festival of Nations Planning Committee: The Sommerfest/Festival of Nations is run by students, teachers, and parents, with each class taking over some stand or activity. What may appear effortless actually requires considerable preparation and coordination - this is where the committee comes in. Volunteers are required for the following: logistics, publicity, entertainment, decoration, layout of stands and shopping. Please volunteer to help make the Sommerfest/Festival of Nations a success! Sports Boosters: Working within the existing sports programs at NMS, this committee coordinates with the sports teachers, AG leaders and students to improve the NMS sports facilities, uniforms and available sport equipment. Also, the committee advocates to the wider school community, the triumphs of our student athletes. Diversity & Vielfalt: This committee works towards raising awareness of the various communities of interest which do or could exist within our school. We support and advise pupils, parents and staff in addressing issues of importance to them. We particularly focus on discrimination and exclusion in curriculum material as well as within social interactions. Traffic Patrol, Buildings, Security: The traffic patrol is organized by this committed group of parents. Other infrastructure issues are also discussed here.
