Essentially, there are two different types of Extracurricular activities at NMS Primary: Internal Workshops, led by the NMS Primary educators and External Workshops, led by outside providers/instructors called Arbeitsgemeinschaften or AG’s.

Presented by the school’s educators, Internal Workshops are an integral part of the NMS Social Learning Curriculum. The NMS Primary educators decide on which students will be attending which workshops during each 8-10 week period, taking the students' wishes into consideration. After 8-10 weeks, students can change to another workshop. Some Internal Workshops are project focused. Others are more of a free play situation. All of them tend to be fun, exciting and a great way to explore and learn more about oneself and the world. Sometimes, a class will have a special internal workshop that is fee based and provided by an external provider. These will be announced in the class.

External Workshops called Arbeitsgemeinschaften or AG’s (pronounced Ah-Gays) are generally presented by external providers and are fee based. During the 2009-2010 school year, Nelson Mandela Primary School offered nearly 25 AG’s led by professionals outside the school. These AG’s take place generally during the afternoon hours of the school day and some after 4:00 PM for older students. The contract and fees are arranged between the provider and the family. Some examples of courses include ballet, football/soccer, guitar, piano, Aikido, choir, music theater, Chinese, Taekwondo, and chess.
