| Africa Committee becomes Madiba Committee |

The newly reconstituted Arbeitskreis Africa Committee changes its name to reflect its new mission. Madiba is a term of endearment and respect for Nelson Mandela, the school’s namesake, and also the name of the clan of which Mr Mandela is a member. In South African traditional culture, a clan name is much more important than a surname as it refers to the honorary title adopted by the elders of Mandela’s clan.. It is considered very polite to use someone’s clan name. The Madiba Group of the NMS has become a clan of sorts with two major purposes in mind: to bring forth the ideas and values of Nelson Mandela to the wider school community and to forge stronger ties with South African schools to foster friendship and understanding.
